Genia Solomon Albrecht, a former senior lecturer in biochemistry and widow of the late Andreas Albrecht, professor of chemistry, died March 19.

Born in Brest-Litovsk in Belarus in 1926, Albrecht immigrated to Montreal in 1935 at age 9. She and her twin brother were the first in the family to attend college. She studied at McGill University and University of California-Berkeley (where she met her future husband Andreas C. Albrecht) and received her Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1954 at the University of Washington, Seattle.

After postdoctoral work at Harvard University, she moved to Ithaca in 1956 with Andreas and paused her scientific work to raise her four children. In the 1980s she returned to biochemistry at Cornell and was honored for her teaching.

Andreas died in 2003; Genia is survived by a sister, her children and six grandchildren.

Donations can be made in honor of the Albrechts to the Sciencenter of Ithaca or to any organizations of choice that work toward social and economic justice or support the performing arts.
