The Office of Engagement Initiatives (OEI) is accepting applications through June 13 for the 2021-22 Engaged Faculty Fellowship Program. This yearlong program has two cohorts:

• Faculty Fellows in Engaged Learning work on developing a syllabus for a community-engaged learning course;
• Faculty Fellows in Engaged Scholarship focus on publishing their community-engaged work.

In both cohorts, which are open to full-time faculty and academic staff, fellows join a small, dynamic group of academics committed to working in, with and for community. They meet monthly to share projects and troubleshoot challenges, and they contribute to a vibrant network of publicly engaged academics.

“I really appreciated the opportunity to learn about community-engaged learning projects and scholarship from other faculty,” said Jeanne Moseley, senior lecturer in the Division of Nutritional Sciences. “It was great motivation for me to do my project. It was the match that lit my project's fire!”

When asked about the most valuable part of the program, other fellows name the supportive cohort and sense of accountability, learning about existing resources and publications, and seeing the many ways academics and students can engage with communities. Fellows also draw on the expertise of the program facilitators: Anna Sims Bartel, associate director of community-engaged curricula and practice in OEI, Amanda Wittman, associate director for community-engaged curricula and strategy in OEI, and faculty co-leads — Amy Newman, senior lecturer in the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, and Rebecca Brenner, lecturer at the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs, in 2020-21.

“While I learned something from all the fellows, having a skilled facilitator was the best part,” said Matthew Pritchard, professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. “When I raised an issue that was new or confusing to me, Anna always had a wealth of experience with the question as approached from different perspectives.”
