Two students receive Caplan Travel Fellowships

Two juniors have received $4,000 Harry Caplan Travel Fellowships to study and conduct research in the Mediterranean.

Elias Kraushaar '12, an economics major and College Scholar, will study ancient Jewish culture, economy and society in modern Israel for a published research paper.

Daniel Ranweiler '12 studies classics, German studies and philosophy, and will take part in the six-week summer session at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, a program providing an intensive introduction to Greece from antiquity through the modern period.

The fellowships honor Harry Caplan '16, the late emeritus professor of classics. Caplan was one of Cornell's most beloved and inspiring teachers for nearly 50 years. After his death in 1980, his former students contributed to an endowment in his honor. Annual travel fellowships from that endowment are awarded to students who share his interests -- including Greek and Latin classics, ancient Jewish culture, and ancient and medieval Latin rhetoric.
