United Way and championship women's ice hockey to be celebrated Feb. 12
By Nancy Doolittle
Two anonymous donors are challenging members of the local and university communities to show their appreciation of Cornell's women's ice hockey champions and celebrate the success of the Cornell United Way Campaign. For each person attending the women's ice hockey game against Yale, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at Lynah Rink, the donors will give $1.11 to the United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC), to help raise the last 6 percent the county needs to meet its goal of $2,111,111.
With its win over St. Lawrence Feb. 5, Cornell's women's ice hockey has clinched the ECAC Hockey regular season championship and the top seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey tournament. Within the past two weeks, Cornell's United Way Campaign reached its largest ever campaign goal of $790,000.
On Feb. 12 at 7 p.m., the Cornell men's basketball team will face Princeton at Newman Arena. During halftime, a staff and student representative who have been serving as UWTC Campaign ambassadors will present a check from the Cornell campaign to James Brown, president of UWTC, and Alan and Nancy Pedersen, UWTC Campaign co-chairs.
"We encourage everyone to come celebrate these incredible achievements," said Paul Streeter, co-chair with Dean of the University Faculty Bill Fry, of the Cornell United Way Campaign.
Game tickets are still available by visiting the Athletic Ticket Office in Bartels Hall, 255-4247. Tickets that have already been purchased for the Feb. 12 Employee Celebration athletic events already include admission to the game.
