By Susan S. Lang
Cornell President David J. Skorton, who is a prominent cardiologist, was awarded the Master of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) designation at the 58th annual ACC meeting in Orlando, Fla., held March 28-31.
The designation of master is reserved for up to four individuals a year who have been "a dedicated fellow of the college for more than 15 years." Typically, the ACC bestows the honor of master on one or two of its more than 15,000 members each year.
In his nomination letter, Dr. Kevin M. Mulhern of the University of Kansas Hospital described Skorton as "truly a master clinician, a superb educator and a creative and productive scholar. His service to the college is exemplary. A fellow of the college for 27 years, Skorton has served on numerous committees, advisory groups and task forces; he also served as chapter governor and as a member of the college's board of trustees.
"He never fails to exercise his keen intellect, superb clinical judgment, energy and compassion for the care of his patients," wrote Mulhern. "He was a pioneer in the care of adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease, establishing one of the first and one of the finest programs in the United States. ... [He] is one of the most talented educators I have encountered ... A combination of respect for the learner, detailed understanding of the topic, excellent communication skills and humor have made him an effective educator in the clinic, the classroom and the auditorium. ... Skorton is a supportive and unselfish mentor whose only reward is the success of his student."
Skorton was also cited for his research in cardiology and applications of electrical and computer engineering that have increased understanding of heart disease, including cardiac imaging. "His contributions to improving the care of adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease are especially noteworthy," asserted Mulhern, whose endorsement was seconded by Dr. Joseph K. Perloff of the University of California-Los Angeles.
A native of Milwaukee, Skorton completed his residency at the University of California-Los Angeles before joining the University of Iowa faculty in 1980. He was named Iowa's 19th president in January 2003. He has been Cornell's president since July 2006.
