Family Medical Leave Act expands benefits for Cornell military families
By Susan S. Lang
Are you caring for a family member who has become ill or injured as a result of his or her military service?
Do you have additional personal responsibilities because a family member is on, or is about to go on, active military duty?
If so, you may be entitled to up to 12 or 26 weeks of job-protected leave from your position, according to newly expanded federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) rules.
Cornell's time away from work policies will be modified to reflect these revisions to the FMLA in the near future, once the U.S. Department of Labor provides guidance to employers.
If you have a situation that you feel may qualify for a leave under the FMLA rules for military families, ask your supervisor, manager or human resource representative, who in turn, may contact Benefits Services, Medical Leaves Administration, at 607-255-3708 or 607-255-7836 for guidance.
