Martin Luther King Jr. Day program is planned for GIAC on Jan. 20
By Ellen Baer
A community program to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, 318 N. Albany St., on Monday, Jan. 20, from 11:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The event, which is free and open to all, is co-sponsored by the Multicultural Resource Center, the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC), the Cornell Public Service Center, the Center for Religion, Ethics and Social Policy (CRESP) at Cornell, members of the Baha' i community and the city of Ithaca.
The celebration will feature a luncheon, with keynote speaker Valerie O. Hayes, director of Cornell's Office of Equal Opportunity, followed by a variety of performances. Activities over the next two hours will include drumming, storytelling, poetry, beadmaking and an elders "speak-out." The final part of the program will be a series educational sessions on the issues of race and diversity in the workplace.
Daycare will be provided from 1 to 5:30 p.m. for children ages 18 months to 5 years old.
Due to the success of last year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, the program's planners say they are expecting another large turnout and an afternoon of exciting activities and discussion.
