Cornell University alumni elect two new trustees
By Jacquie Powers
Cornell's alumni body recently elected Judith C. Areen and Samuel C. Fleming to four-year terms on the Cornell Board of Trustees.
They succeed Eleanor S. Applewhaite and J. Thomas Clark on the board effective July 1. Applewhaite and Clark are completing four-year terms as alumni elected trustees.
Areen, who received her bachelor of arts degree from Cornell in 1966, is dean of the Georgetown Law Center, executive vice president of law center affairs and a professor of law at Georgetown University. She earned a law degree from Yale Law School in 1969.
In running for election to the board, Areen said she would focus on four priorities: "Maintaining a balance between teaching and research to ensure that undergraduates have enough opportunities to work directly with outstanding faculty on research projects as well as in the classroom. . . . Better managing the business side of the university. . . . Revitalizing the curriculum to prepare graduates for a world in which business is increasingly global in scope. . . . Preserving Cornell's distinctive tradition of achieving academic excellence without fostering elitism."
Fleming, who received his bachelor of science degree from Cornell in chemical engineering in 1963, is chief executive officer with Decision Resources Inc., an international publishing and consulting firm serving health care, information technology and process industries. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1967.
In his election bid, Fleming said, "Initiatives deserving priority are those that assure excellence in teaching, research, and extracurricular activities and that anticipate needs of Cornell graduates in the 21st century. Examples include: Enhance undergraduate living and learning experience. . . . Preserve the diversity of the Cornell experience. . . . Assure continued preeminence in science and engineering. . . . Enhance the lifelong Cornell experience."
