Dean L. Taylor memorial service set for Sept. 22 in Cornell chapel
By Roger Segelken
Friends and colleagues of Dean L. Taylor will remember the late professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in a memorial service on Monday, Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel of Anabel Taylor Hall.
Taylor, a faculty member in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for more than 20 years, died unexpectedly at his home on July 31. He was 48.
David A. Caughey, director of the Sibley School, said Taylor will be remembered as an innovative researcher and educator in the fields of system dynamics, computer-aided design, design theory, micromechanical machines and concurrent engineering.
Taylor, who served as associate director of the school from 1991 to 1996, led the faculty in a curriculum review that produced major revisions in the teaching of mechanical engineering at Cornell. He was the driving force and inspiration, Caughey said, behind the development of the Design Studio of the Future, an integrated computing/communications/prototyping laboratory for courses and student projects in the Sibley School.
In addition to the Design Studio of the Future, Taylor developed research laboratories, including the Integrated Mechanical Analysis Project and its successor, the Biomechanics Computing Laboratory, which is used extensively for the analysis and design of orthopedic implants in the Sibley School's joint research program with the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. A textbook by Taylor, Computer-Aided Design (Addison-Wesley, 1992), was based on his popular course at Cornell and presents his approach to using the computer for design and analysis.
A reception in the Upson Hall lounge will follow the service.
