'Project PigeonWatch' and Cornell birders featured on Discovery Channel Nov. 24 and 29
By Roger Segelken
The Discovery Channel's "All Birds TV" series will feature the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology's Project PigeonWatch in New York City in a show to be aired Monday, Nov. 24, at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 29, at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.
Project PigeonWatch is one of the citizen-science projects of the Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. PigeonWatchers throughout the world collect data on pigeon color variations and send their findings to Cornell for analysis. In the process, professional ornithologists learn more about a common -- but rarely studied -- bird, while volunteer participants learn about birds and science.
With host/ornithologist Ken Dial, the "All Birds TV" program documents the pigeon-watching work of youthful New York City Urban Park Rangers in the heart of the Bronx.
Other youth groups and school classes can join Project Pigeon Watch by calling 1-800-843-BIRD or writing to: Project PigeonWatch, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, P.O. Box 11, Ithaca, N.Y. 14851-0011. Information also is available by visiting the Cornell lab's Web site athttp://birds.cornell.edu and selecting "Citizen Science" and "Project PigeonWatch." A participant's fee of $10 for individuals and $15 for groups helps offset the costs of Project PigeonWatch.
