Greg Galvin, M.S. ’82, Ph.D. ’84, MBA ’93, chairman and CEO of Rheonix Inc. and Mezmeriz Inc. and co-founder and former CEO of Kionix Inc., has been named Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year 2014. He will be honored April 10-11 during Entrepreneurship@Cornell’s annual conference on campus.

Galvin launched his first company, Kionix, in 1993, to commercialize a micro-electro-mechanical systems technology platform based on Cornell research. He sold part of that company to Calient Networks Inc. in 2000, retaining the consumer electronics, automotive and microfluidic technologies. In 2009, he sold the second incarnation of Kionix to Rohm Co. Ltd. Prior to that sale, Galvin spun off Rheonix from Kionix.

Rheonix, located in Ithaca, develops microfluidic-based molecular diagnostic systems with applications in research, health care and public safety. The tools can detect and distinguish between different forms of infectious diseases, aid physicians when determining dosage and reaction possibilities, and can also be used to detect contaminants in water systems.

Mezmeriz is an early stage micro-electro-mechanical systems company in the image recognition and projection markets. Like Kionix and Rheonix, Mezmeriz is based in Ithaca.

In addition to his current management roles at Rheonix and Mezmeriz, Galvin also serves on the board of BinOptics Inc., is a member of several scientific societies and is an inventor named in 58 patents.

Galvin was elected to the Cornell Board of Trustees in 2011 and also serves on the advisory councils for the College of Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Entrepreneurship@Cornell.

Galvin is a trustee of Ithaca’s Sciencenter and a director of Tompkins County Area Development. He has a B.S. in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

The Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year award is given annually by Entrepreneurship@Cornell to a Cornellian who exemplifies entrepreneurial achievement, community service and high ethical standards. Galvin will be honored during a gala dinner Thursday, April 10, in the Statler Hotel Ballroom.
