Campus mourns death of Sanya Hashmi '14
On Feb. 4, Susan Murphy, vice president for student and academic services, issued the following statement to the Cornell community:
It is with great sadness that I share news of the death of Sanya Hashmi, a 21-year-old senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the class of 2014. She died on Monday night, February 3, after spending seven days in intensive care at Cayuga Medical Center. Her parents were at her side.
Sanya majored in biological sciences, worked in the Computational Physiology Laboratory, and planned to attend medical school. She is being mourned by the Cornell Muslim community - especially by members of the Muslim Educational and Cultural Association, where she was a beloved member who made many contributions. She also was a dedicated and highly respected counselor in the Empathy, Assistance and Referral Service (EARS) program. In addition, she was on the Committee for the Advancement of Muslim Culture board, and she had been active in the Islamic Alliance for Justice and the MultiFaith Ambassadors.
Sanya's parents are making plans for her janazah (funeral prayers service), which will take place this week in her hometown, Holmdel, New Jersey. Plans for a commemoration at Cornell will be made in the days to come.
On behalf of the entire university community, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Sanya's family and friends. Please join me in taking a moment to remember Sanya and acknowledge this unfortunate loss to our community.
