Cornell switches to new long-term care insurance broker

Effective Feb. 1, Cornell contracted with RetirementGuard, a long-term care (LTC) insurance broker, for faculty and staff members who want to enroll in such a policy.

To introduce RetirementGuard’s services, firm representatives will be on campus March 29 for three sessions:

  • 9-10:30 a.m. in G01 Biotechnology;
  • 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in 140 East Hill Office Building; and
  • 1-2:30 p.m., 140 East Hill Office Building.

No registration is necessary.

Long-term care insurance covers the costs associated with extended long-term care due to a chronic disease or disability. LTC insurance covers expenses for many services at nursing homes, adult day care centers and assisted living facilities and for at-home care services. Employees can enroll in long-term care insurance at any time.

RetirementGuard is an insurance brokerage firm specializing in analyzing LTC policies on a case-by-case basis to find the best-fitting LTC policy on the market for each individual. RetirementGuard earns commissions on the LTC policies it sells.

“We believe this arrangement provides the best value and service to our employees,” said Paul Bursic, senior director of Benefit Services. “With the exception of current LTC participants, most insurance companies have moved out of offering LTC as a group policy. For years, RetirementGuard has been successfully serving the faculty and staff of Yale and Brown universities with its individual LTC policy.”

Bursic noted reviews of RetirementGuard’s performance from the benefits offices at those campuses are quite favorable.

The RetirementGuard website for Cornell contains advice for those considering LTC insurance. To learn more about RetirementGuard and the companies they quote, attend one of the March 29 in-person sessions, visit the RetirementGuard website or call (888) 793-6111.

Current employees enrolled in CNA, the university’s prior vendor, have been automatically continued in their current CNA policy, which will remain in effect as long as they continue to pay their premiums to CNA.
