Alumnae in media and the arts on campus March 5

From the silver screen, the airwaves, the stage and the page, renowned Cornellians return to campus March 5 to share their media-industry savvy at free events sponsored by the President’s Council of Cornell Women (PCCW), as part of its weekend-long annual symposium.

“Cornell Women in Film,” 1:45–3:15 p.m. at Cornell Cinema, features a panel discussion about movie making, moderated by filmmaker Deborah Hoard, M.P.S. ’78, president of Ithaca-based PhotoSynthesis Productions. Speakers include pioneering producer Lucy Jarvis ’38, president of Jarvis Productions, whose films and documentaries include “The Kremlin” and “A Golden Prison: The Louvre”; freelance film editor Kathryn Schubert, M.A. ’05, whose credits include “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Only Lovers Left Alive”; Mary Fessenden, director of Cornell Cinema; and student filmmaker Kimberly Scarsella ’16.

“Issues in the Arts,” 5–6 p.m. in Alice Statler Auditorium, features presentations by Adepero Oduye ’99, whose acting credits include “The Big Short” and “12 Years a Slave”; Carol Fein Ross ’72, vice president at Hachette Book Group; and Antoinette Trotman ’87, vice president at Universal Records.

Oduye will talk about challenges faced by black women pursuing careers in acting, writing and directing, and she will share examples of pioneers who have braved these challenges. Ross will discuss current and emerging trends in book publishing and how technological innovation and changes in the marketplace continue to influence publishing, literature and reading. Trotman will share insights from a 20-year career in music and talk about challenges and opportunities for women professionals in an ever-changing industry.

Established in 1990, PCCW is “a group of highly accomplished alumnae working to enhance the involvement of women students, faculty, staff and alumnae as leaders within Cornell University and its many communities.” The group’s mission also includes advising the Cornell president on issues affecting women.
