At its meetings in New York City, Friday, Jan. 20, and in Ithaca, Saturday, Jan. 21, the Cornell University Board of Trustees approved a set of planning parameters for the 2006-07 budget that calls for a 4.8 percent tuition increase for most students in the endowed colleges. The 4.8 percent increase sets tuition for Cornell's endowed undergraduate and Graduate School students at $32,800 for the 2006-07 academic year. Currently the tuition is $31,300.

The approved planning parameters also call for increases for the 2006-07 academic year for undergraduate students enrolled in the contract colleges: a 5 percent increase for New York state residents, to $18,060; a 5 percent increase for nonresident first-year through third-year students, to $31,700; and a 5.2 percent increase for nonresident fourth-year students, to $30,500. Consultation with the State University of New York trustees will take place before these tuitions are finalized.

Ithaca campus professional school tuition and other fees for 2006-07 approved by the trustees are:

• Johnson Graduate School of Management: Tuition was increased by 6.7 percent to $38,000. Summer tuition for the 12-month option was increased by 7.9 percent to $23,800.
• Cornell Law School: Tuition for entering students was increased by 7.5 percent to $40,580. For continuing students, tuition increased 7.1 percent to $39,640 for second-year students and $38,850 for third-year students. For the one-year LL.M. program, tuition was increased by 7.5 percent to $42,500.
• Veterinary Medicine: Tuition for resident students was increased by 4.5 percent to $23,000. Tuition for nonresident students was increased by 4.8 percent to $33,000.
• Undergraduate student activity fees increased by 8.4 percent to $181, as recommended by the Student Assembly.
• Graduate and professional student activity fees increased by 12.9 percent to $70, as recommended by the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly.
• Undergraduate housing rates (double room average) were increased by 5.1 percent to an average of $6,390.
• The full-plan dining contract was increased by 4 percent to $4,336.
