Volunteers needed for Slope Day on May 12

Volunteers are needed for Slope Day 2016, May 12. All staff and faculty are encouraged to sign up.

For those of you who volunteered in the past – join again, and invite a new colleague to help out as well. For those who have never volunteered before – join about 800 other volunteers in helping the Cornell community safely enjoy one of the university’s oldest traditions.

Several changes have been made to the event and volunteer opportunities that will help the day run smoothly and keep students even safer.

  • Gate and Slope Fest crews will start earlier. Slope Fest, the alcohol-free activity fair on Ho Plaza, will open at 9 a.m., with new student-designed activities. Free breakfast and activities for students will be available at locations leading to the Slope, to encourage students to eat and to attend Slope Fest. As a result, Slope Fest crew volunteers are needed starting at 7 a.m., and gate crew volunteers, for Tower and Gannett Gates, starting at 8:30 a.m.
  • More volunteers are needed for gap coverage. Last year’s student surveys indicated some increase in the amount of alcohol brought onto the Slope. To prevent students from passing alcohol over the fences, more security will be provided. As a result, more volunteers are needed for gap coverage.
  • ID checkers will not handle cash; students will pay for wrist bands in advance.
  • Before signing up to volunteer, be sure you can commit to attend a training session. Training sessions are detailed on the sign-up form with each job description. Attending a training session is especially important for gate, ID check tent and gap volunteers, as new procedures are being implemented.

If you are not required to work the event, consider talking to your supervisor and signing up to be a Level 2 volunteer for at least one four-hour shift.

Visit slopeday.cornell.edu to sign up; complete details of all volunteer opportunities can be found directly on the sign-up form.
