Philip Meilman has been appointed director of psychological services at Cornell University's Gannett Health Center. Meilman joined the staff on Sept. 23, and he brings 19 years of experience devoted to college mental health.

"We are delighted that Phil Meilman has joined our staff," said Janet Corson-Rikert, M.D., director of University Health Services. "He brings fresh vision and strong clinical leadership to psychological services and a commitment to collaboration and outreach on campus and in the community."

Meilman comes to Cornell from the College of William and Mary where he has been the director of counseling services and research professor of psychology for the past six years. Prior to his work at William and Mary, Meilman held clinical, administrative and academic positions at both Dartmouth College and the University of Nebraska. At each institution, Meilman has been an advocate and supporter of a broad mix of clinical, preventive and outreach activities.

"I am especially pleased to be here and look forward to building on existing programs and developing new initiatives which can help our students navigate successfully through their years at Cornell," Meilman said.

In addition to his work with individual college counseling centers, Meilman has served as the co-director of the CORE Institute (Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Studies) which operates out of Southern Illinois University. The CORE Institute is a research center which collects and manages the world's largest database on alcohol and drug use on college campuses. The list of his publications related to this research and to many other topic areas are numerous, and of particular note is a book he co-authored entitled Beating the College Blues.

Meilman earned a B.A. from Harvard University in 1973 and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977.
