Trustees and Council members gather at Cornell Oct. 24-27

Hundreds of members of the Board of Trustees and University Council will arrive on campus Thursday, Oct. 24, for Cornell University's annual Trustee/Council Weekend.

The annual meeting of the 440-member council and a quarterly meeting of the trustees are scheduled on campus every fall so that the groups may attend joint meetings and hear President Hunter Rawlings' State of the University Address. The council is an advisory body made up of alumni and friends of the university who are elected by the trustees.

Rawlings' speech, which is open only to trustees, council members and their spouses, will be delivered on Friday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m. in the Alice Statler Auditorium, Statler Hall.

The Board of Trustees will meet Saturday morning beginning at 9:15 p.m. in the Trustee Meeting Room of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. The open portion of the meeting will include a report from Rawlings, a report from Provost Don M. Randel on the university's 1997-98 state budget request for the state-supported schools and colleges, a report on six-year enrollment trends and a financial report on fiscal year 1995-96.

Several committees also will have open sessions on Thursday:

  • The Committee on Land Grant and Statutory College Affairs' full meeting -- from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Pennsylvania Room of the Statler Hotel -- will be open for discussion on a range of program and financial matters affecting Cornell's state-assisted colleges.
  • The Buildings and Properties Committee, meeting from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Statler Hotel's Yale-Princeton Room, will be open for the first 20 minutes to hear status reports on ongoing projects.
  • The Committee on Academic Affairs and Campus Life's meeting, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Robert Purcell Community Center, will be open for the first hour and a half to hear a report on curriculum review and for a panel discussion on the range of student programs in all types of residential housing.

A limited number of tickets for the full board's open session will be available starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Information and Referral desk in the lobby of Day Hall. No tickets are needed for the open sessions of the committees.

After Rawlings' speech, at 10:30 Friday morning, Randel and Senior Vice President Frederick A. Rogers will speak on "The Pressures on Higher Education Today."

On Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, council members can choose from a series of seminars offered by Cornell faculty on a variety of subjects. The seminars range from "Point, Counterpoint: The '96 Candidates for U.S. President" to "The Human Machine: The Latest News from the Interface of Biology and Engineering."

On Saturday afternoon, trustees join the council members for the football game with Dartmouth. The unveiling and dedication of the bust of President Emeritus Frank H.T. Rhodes will be at 5 p.m. in Frank H.T. Rhodes Hall. The bust, by Muriel Kaplan, Class of 1946, is the gift of members of the Class of 1955.
