By Abby Eller
M&T Bank is offering a full scholarship to Cornell's Summer College, one of the nation's first summer programs for high school students. High school juniors and seniors from Broome, Cortland and Tompkins counties are eligible for the M&T scholarship, which is worth $4,950.
The six-week program introduces high school juniors and seniors to the challenges of college study and helps to ease the transition into college. The program also offers career exploration programs, college study skills and math workshops, and a look at the college admissions process through the eyes of admissions officers.
"We see this as an excellent investment in a promising student's future," said Scott Dagenais, president and chief operating officer at M&T's Southern Division. He noted that the bank encourages students in the region to apply for the M&T scholarship through their high school guidance office.
Abby Eller, director of Cornell's Summer College, said students in the Summer College program "benefit from the same excellent classroom instruction as Cornell undergraduates enjoy." In addition, she said, students live in residence halls, eat in dining halls, and participate in cultural and social activities.
"This is a comprehensive program," Eller said. "It is a challenging and academically enriching program that mirrors the freshman experience, complete with support services and special activities to help students make important choices about their future."
Students who exhibit "superior academic ability, maturity and intellectual curiosity" are invited to apply for the program, Eller explained.
The scholarship covers tuition, room and board, and are for students who also demonstrate financial need. High school teachers, guidance counselors and superintendents in Broome, Cortland and Tompkins counties have been sent information about Cornell's Summer College.
Applications are available in guidance offices and should be submitted to Cornell by May 14. Additional information may be obtained by calling (607) 255-6203.
