Cornell ILR School panel examines organized labor on Aug. 28

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University will hold its annual Labor Day celebration Thursday, Aug. 28, at noon in Room G10 of the Biotechnology Building.

The celebration this year will feature a panel discussion on "Organized Labor in 1997: Partnerships, Strikes and the Team Act." Panelists include Joe Alvarez, the Northeast Regional Director for the AFL-CIO; Harry Katz, Cornell professor of collective bargaining; and James Rundle, an ILR extension associate. Risa Lieberwitz, Cornell associate professor of labor law, will be the moderator.

The panel presentation is especially timely given the recent national labor news: the strike and settlement between the United Parcel Service and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the ruling by a federal official that disqualified the last year's Teamsters' presidential election results, in which Ron Carey defeated James Hoffa Jr.
