Body in gorge is identified as Cornell graduate student

Ithaca Police have identified the body of a person found in Cascadilla gorge Dec. 2 as Robert Battig, 29, a Cornell University graduate student in mathematics.

Battig enrolled in the doctoral program in mathematics in fall 1992 and was scheduled to receive his doctorate in May. He was a recipient of a Sloan Dissertation Fellowship this year.

Battig completed his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of California at Davis.

He resided on East Seneca Street in Ithaca.

Ithaca Police say the cause and manner of Battig's death is still under investigation.
