Tango! concert and dance performances at Cornell Oct. 30
By Franklin Crawford
Ithaca Tangueros is hosting Tango! a concert and dance performance Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m., in the Statler Auditorium at Cornell. The show includes live tango music and performances by some of the finest Argentine Tango couples dancers in the world.
Tickets for general audience are $12 in advance ($15 at the door); and for students, seniors and children, $8 in advance ($10 at the door). Tickets can be purchased at the Willard Straight Hall Ticket Office, (607) 255-3430; Clinton House Ticket Center, (607) 273-4497; and Ithaca Guitar Works, (607) 272-2602.
Tango dancing will be performed by Facundo and Kely Posados of Buenos Aires; Diego Di Falco and Carolina Zokalski, also of Buenos Aires; members of Ithaca Tangueros, including Cornell alumnus Matej Oresic, Ph.D. '99, and Rina Gendelman, a current Ph.D. candidate in biochemistry; and Ed Goytea, of New York City, and Robinne Gray, of Ithaca.
Ithaca Tangueros is a Cornell student organization co-founded by Oresic and devoted strictly to Argentine Tango. The group is one of dozens of university organizations now devoted to the dance. Oresic and Gendelman performed Argentine Tango dances at Carnegie Hall in June and have been an inspiration to dancers in the Cornell and Ithaca communities. Dozens of area dancers have been captivated by the exotic dance form, once outlawed in Argentina.
Music will be provided by the New York Buenos Aires Connection, the foremost Argentine Tango Ensemble in North America, and by Mark Simon, clarinet, Pablo Cohen, guitar, and Gordon Stout, percussion.
Tango! is part of Ithaca's Fall Tango Festival, which runs Oct. 29-31. The festival will include social dancing each night, instruction and a Tango Ball with live music by the New York Buenos Aires Connection, Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center.
Tango! is co-sponsored by the Cornell Council for the Arts. For more information, call Oresic at (607) 273-9109 or e-mail matej.oresic.@cornell.edu.
