Southeast Asian studies expert Anthony Milner to launch Cornell conference with a public lecture April 7

Anthony Milner, the Basham Professor of Asian History and dean of the faculty of Asian Studies at Australian National University, will deliver the fifth Frank H. Golay Memorial Lecture Friday, April 7, at 4:40 p.m. in B-14 Hollister Hall on the Cornell University campus. Milner's lecture, titled "Southeast Asian Studies as a Resource: A View from Australia," is free and open to the public.

The lecture also launches the Cornell Southeast Asia Program's conference titled "Reassessing Resources: Teaching, Writing, and Civic Action." The conference will be held at the Kahin Center, 640 Stewart Ave., April 7-9.

Milner's lecture will set the tone for a conference intended to examine critically the future of Southeast Asian studies, while identifying exciting new directions in the field. Recent changes in several academic disciplines have called into question the place and even the relevance of area studies. Also, interesting developments that have been taking place in the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia warrant closer examination.

Additional details about the conference, local accommodations and registration forms, which can be submitted electronically, are available on Southeast Asia Program's World Wide Web page at <www.einaudi.cornell.edu/SoutheastAsia>.
