Cornell Cooperative Extension mobilizes statewide resources
By Linda Grace-Kobas
Cornell Cooperative Extension's statewide network has been mobilized to help New Yorkers cope with Tuesday's tragedy and its aftermath. Among resources available now are:
- A web page that offers many educational resources for parents, educators and others. Topics include how to help children cope with tragedy. The web site is at: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/issues/cceresponds/. It will be updated daily for the foreseeable future.
- Cornell Cooperative Extension's county-based educators are sharing educational materials locally with schools and community organizations through listservs.
- Executive directors of Extension in every county are contacting local government officials and offering to support community efforts in whatever ways are appropriate, including providing educational materials and offering training programs.
- The real effects of these tragic events will be felt in the weeks and months ahead. Cornell Cooperative Extension leadership will work with county staffs to plan programs designed to support the efforts of local communities, schools, and other organizations in coping with this crisis. In addition to staff development for Extension educators, there will be training for local citizens to deal with tragedy.
Cornell Cooperative Extension is part of a national consortium of land grant universities that develop and share educational resources designed to help extension communities support local communities in times of disaster. Cathy Shiels, director of the FarmNet program, is working with her colleagues to identify programs and materials that may help local New York communities cope with the current crisis.
