Cornell Glee Club ends January tour with concerts in Elmira and Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell University Glee Club, an internationally acclaimed 60-member male choir whose members are Cornell students, will give concerts at Elmira College's Gibson Theater, Elmira, N.Y., on Jan. 17 at 8 p.m., and at Sage Chapel on Cornell's campus in Ithaca on Jan. 25 at 8 p.m.

The two concerts conclude a two-week tour of the southeastern United States, with performances in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Washington, D.C. For ticket information and other concert details, see this web site: http://www.gleeclub.cornell.edu .

The first half of each concert will consist of male choral music from a variety of cultures. The repertoire spans from European Renaissance to folk music of the Americas. In the second half, the Hangovers, the a cappella subset of the Glee Club, will perform several original arrangements of popular music. The final portion of the concerts will be devoted to traditional Cornell songs, including Give My Regards to Davy and the Cornell Alma Mater .

Highlights of the repertoire include the Gloria from Josquin's Missa Mater Patris and the Agnus Dei from Dufay's Missa Ave Regina Coelorum . Other selections include Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium and Eugen Suchon's Ej, Dziny, Dziny, Dom . Among its selections of folk music, the Glee Club will be performing arrangements of two traditional sea chanteys, Lowlands and What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor .

The Cornell University Glee Club, founded in 1868, is one of the oldest groups of its kind in the country. The Glee Club has given concerts throughout the United States and in more than 20 countries, including the People's Republic of China, Germany, Great Britain, the former Soviet Union and Japan. The group also has performed live on NBC, CBS, PBS and the BBC. Recent accomplishments include performances of Bach's Mass in B minor with the Orquesta Sinfónica Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho in Venezuela and Verdi's Requiem with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. The Glee Club is under the direction of Scott Tucker.
