Lehman appoints Barbara Krause senior advisor to the president

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell University President Jeffrey S. Lehman announced today (Aug. 29) that he has appointed Barbara L. Krause to the position of senior advisor to the president, effective Sept. 1. In that position she will advise the president on a wide variety of issues related to the university and will accept special assignments from the president as needed.

Since Jan. 1, Krause has been counselor to the president-elect and transition director. Prior to that, she served as executive secretary to the search committee that nominated Lehman for election by Cornell's Board of Trustees while also serving as assistant secretary of the corporation and associate university counsel.

"Barbara Krause is a gifted attorney, possessing rare measures of judgment, insight, analytical acuity and organizational talent," said Lehman. "At the same time, her experience as assistant secretary of the corporation has given her a deep understanding of the range of issues that confront the president of the university. I found her counsel to be invaluable during the transition period, and I am grateful for her willingness to continue to serve Cornell in this new role."

Krause graduated summa cum laude from Duke University in 1981, receiving her A.B. degree with a double major in philosophy and German. She received her J.D. degree from the Cornell Law School in 1986 and served as editor in chief of theCornell International Law Journal . Following a one-year clerkship with Judge Edward T. Gignoux of the Federal District Court for the District of Maine, Krause was an associate and later a shareholder at the Portland, Maine, law firm of Drummond Woodsum & MacMahon. Krause joined Cornell in 1995, serving for three and one-half years as the judicial administrator before joining the Office of University Counsel.

A native of Freeport, Maine, Krause attended Bowdoin College for one year before transferring to Duke University. She captained the Duke women's basketball teams in 1980 and 1981 and was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
