ITHACA, N.Y. -- David Wippman has been appointed associate dean of academic affairs at Cornell Law School, effective this June. Wippman is a professor at the Law School whose areas of expertise include public international law, human rights and the laws of war.

Wippman received his B.A. in 1976 from Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude ; his M.A. in 1978 from Yale University; and his J.D. in 1982 from Yale Law School, where he was editor in chief of the Yale Law Journal. That same year he started his clerkship with Judge Wilfred Feinberg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Following a stint as an associate with the law firm of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer and Murphy in 1982-83, Wippman joined a new Washington, D.C., law firm, Reichler and Appelbaum, in 1984, becoming a name partner in 1987.

In 1992 Wippman joined Cornell Law School's faculty as an associate professor. In 1998, he took a year's leave to become a director for multilateral and humanitarian affairs with the National Security Council. He was named a full professor in 2000. He is currently co-writing a book on humanitarian intervention and the rule of law and editing a second book on recent developments in the laws of war. The first book received a grant from the U.S. Institute of Peace; both projects also are supported by the Carnegie Corp. At the Law School, Wippman has been a speaker on panels on such topical subjects as "The Aftermath of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks," "The Challenges of International Peacekeeping in Countries That Use Child Soldiers," and "Accountability for War Crimes in Iraq."

"David Wippman is a dedicated teacher and a leading scholar in public international law," said Cornell Law School Dean Stewart Schwab. "He is admired by colleagues for his thoughtful and balanced judgment."

Wippman said, of his new appointment: "I look forward to working with faculty, administrators and students to strengthen even further the Law School's already rich academic programs."
