Giant appetizer will serve as 'springboard' for Guinness world record

ITHACA, N.Y. -- What do you get when you combine a bunch of crazy college kids and a giant spring roll? A possible Guinness world record, all in the name of charity. Students at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration plan to create the world's longest spring roll Saturday, April 30. This attempt at a new record -- 1,315 feet -- will benefit tsunami relief efforts.

Taking part in "Roll for Relief" will be students and faculty members from each of Cornell's seven undergraduate colleges and the university's College of Veterinary Medicine, Johnson Graduate School of Management and Law School. The college or school raising the most money prior to the Roll for Relief event will have its name immortalized in the Guinness World Records book as the creator of the "World's Longest Spring Roll." Additionally, the top student and faculty fund-raiser from each college will be awarded the "First Bite Prize" and will be the first to taste the record-setting spring roll.

The construction process begins at 2 p.m. in Barton Hall on campus and is expected to take two hours -- with the spring roll stretching around the gymnasium's indoor track. From 4:30 to 6 p.m., individual portions will be sold for a minimum donation of $5 each. Participants will receive a commemorative wristband marking the occasion and inscribed with "Let Love Roll." Hotel School student organizations will sponsor a spring roll eating contest, and entertainment will be provided by local bands.

The Dean's Office in the School of Hotel Administration is providing funding for Roll for Relief, along with Hotel School student organizations. Wegmans supermarket in Ithaca is a lead sponsor, donating all ingredients and providing volunteers to help assemble the spring roll. All proceeds will benefit the Tzu Chi Foundation, a worldwide charity organization based in Taiwan that provides medical care, supplies and housing to people affected by the December tsunami.
