Two Cornell-related PBS documentaries to air on local stations

Two documentaries "Alpha Phi Alpha Men: A Century of Leadership" and "Cornell: Birth of the American University," both Cornell-related, will air on local PBS TV stations beginning this weekend.

"Alpha Phi Alpha Men" is a history of the nation's oldest black fraternity, which was founded at Cornell and whose members have included W.E.B. DuBois, Edward Brooke, Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young and Martin Luther King Jr.

It will air on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 14, at 10:30 p.m. on WSKG-TV and on Sunday, Feb. 26 at noon on WCNY-TV.

The award-winning "Cornell: Birth of the American University" begins in October 1868 as Cornell's first students began their rugged hike up to campus. The documentary also chronicles how the individual dreams and ambitions of Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White came together to change the way higher education was taught in the United States and to create one of the world's great institutions of learning. This one-hour documentary includes rare photos and film footage from Cornell's Archives. The film won the "Best Documentary" award from the New York State Broadcasters Association in June 2005.

It will air on WSKG on Tuesday, March 14, at 9 p.m.
