Big Red hockey great Joe Nieuwendyk honored at Lynah

Cornell hockey great and former National Hockey League player Joe Nieuwendyk addresses the crowd at Lynah Rink before the Cornell-St. Lawrence game Feb. 3. Nieuwendyk, who announced his retirement from professional hockey in December, was in Ithaca for weekend games against Clarkson and St. Lawrence.

Nieuwendyk spent 20 years in the NHL and won three Stanley Cup titles. During his days with the Big Red from 1984 to 1987, he scored 73 career goals, the sixth most in school history.

A member of the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame, Nieuwendyk will have his number 25 retired early next season.
