K-12 teacher grants advance European studies

The Institute for European Studies (IES) at Cornell has awarded five grants to K-12 teachers in the upstate New York area through its Teacher Grant for Developing a Curriculum Unit on Europe program.

The grants, which total $5,625, were awarded to: Lynn Brosch, reading specialist and technology trainer, grade 5, "Exploring the History and Geography of Europe," R.J. McNulty Academy, Amsterdam; Susan Child-Dauphin, social studies teacher, grades 9-10, "A Brief History of the Balkan Struggles of the 20th Century," Gray Bodley High School, Fulton; Dorothy Fulk, Spanish teacher, grade 8, "Mapping Granada," Candor High School; Kelly Horrocks, social studies and English teacher, grade 6, "Introducing the European Union," DeWitt Middle School, Ithaca; Robin Trapani, library media specialist, grades 7-12, "Real Lives-Real People," Frewsburg Central School, Frewsburg.

Each grantee will receive $1,000 plus $125 for travel expenses to create Europe-focused units that meet New York State Department of Education curriculum standards. The new units will be made available via the Internet to teachers across New York state and nationwide.

Four of the grants are made possible with funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The fifth award is funded through the European Union Commission to the United States as part of a yearlong project "Getting to Know Europe."
