Letter to the Editor: Students donate their energies -- unsolicited -- to Family & Children's Service

To the Editor:

Family & Children's Service of Ithaca has long enjoyed a great working relationship with Cornell, providing the staffing for the university's Employee Assistance Program and a preferred referral partner with Gannett's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) program. We have also been the grateful recipient of generous philanthropy from Cornell and enjoyed many Cornellians as board members and volunteers with our agency.

Cornell students have also volunteered and interned at our agency for many years. As an agency dedicated to the welfare and well-being of young people, we have always been keen to engage with Cornell students. We wanted to inform you that in the last month, various Cornell student groups have presented us with more than $11,000 to benefit various programs and special initiatives at Family & Children's Service.

  • The Cornell Football team held a car wash April 27 at Shortstop Deli and raised $1,429, while the Omega Chi chapter of Kappa Delta sorority's bowling tournament raised $2,587. These funds will support our youth services department to assist at-risk youth.
  • Delta Upsilon held a flower sale to benefit elderly seniors in need of sliding-fee assistance in our Home Care Program, raising $1,100. The Alpha Delta Phi fraternity's Victory Club Casino Night event raised $6,500 for our children's mental health clinic capital expansion.

The most compelling part of all these wonderful donations is they were done on our behalf without any request from us … they chose us for their good deeds and donations! We are sincerely grateful of Cornell's active and engaged philanthropy and community service to Family & Children's Service of Ithaca and our entire community.

Please accept our sincerest thanks and a deep sense of gratitude and pride being associated with Cornell!

With kind regards,

George Schuler, Ph.D., Chair, Board of Directors
