Hotel School student, family members die in car accident

A memorial gathering for Laura Smith '12 will be held Saturday, June 19, 1-3 p.m. at the Hoffman Challenge Course, Mt. Pleasant Road, Ithaca.

A School of Hotel Administration student, her father and her grandparents, both Cornell alumni, died in an automobile accident in California June 3.

The student, Laura Katharine Smith of Ashland, Ore., was a rising junior at the Hotel School. Also killed in the accident were her paternal grandparents, Richard Smith, Ph.D. '59, and Sally Smith '59, and her father, Matthew Jay Smith, of Ashland, Ore.

"The Cornell community is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Laura Smith, her father and grandparents," said Vice President for University Communications Tommy Bruce. "We wish to express our deepest condolences to the Smith family and her friends at the university."

Laura Smith is survived by her mother, Jennifer Smith, and siblings Kally, Eric and Sadie. Sadie '10 will graduate from the College of Architecture, Art and Planning in December.
