A.D. White Professors-at-Large nominations due Dec. 1

Cornell faculty members can submit nominations for the Andrew D. White Professors-at-Large program through Dec. 1.

A.D. White Professors-at-Large are outstanding individuals of international distinction, appointed to six-year terms as nonresident visiting professors at Cornell. During their tenure, professors visit campus twice for about one week to interact with faculty, students and members of the community at public lectures, informal meetings and various other events. The program's administrators coordinate the logistics of each visit and related programming.

Past professors have included actor John Cleese, philosopher and literary critic Jacque Derrida, sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, primatologist Jane Goodall, engineer and astronaut Mae Jemison and geneticist Craig Venter.

Faculty members, academic departments and groups of departments are welcome to propose candidates by submitting a pre-proposal letter noting the nominee's qualifications and achievements, along with a copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae. The letter should indicate the faculty, departments or programs that agree to support the nomination. The program particularly encourages the nomination of women and minority candidates.

A faculty committee will invite successful sponsors to submit a full proposal expanding on the case for the nominee. The full proposal, due March 1, includes letters of support; the strongest proposals are sent to the Office of the President and the Cornell Board of Trustees for approval. Approved professors will begin their terms July 1, 2011.

Pre-proposal letters should be e-mailed to adwhitepal@cornell.edu or delivered to 726 University Ave., Room 307.
