Helping Japan
A charity concert for disaster relief in Japan will feature music by Annette Richards and David Yearsley on Cornell's baroque organ, harpist Jayne Demakos and sung poems by Sahoko Ichikawa, Shakuhachi Kyoko Selden and Marc Keane, July 2, 7:30 p.m. in Anabel Taylor Hall.
Monies raised at the concert will support the work of the Tohoku Disaster Relief NGO Center in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The center is providing relief supplies and volunteers to help about 40,000 tsunami victims living in emergency evacuation centers. Tickets will be available at the door for a suggested donation of $20 (checks or cash accepted). Reservations, information: mpk27@cornell.edu.
Cary Grant classics
Cornell Cinema is presenting outdoor screenings of two Cary Grant classics on the Willard Straight Terrace in July as part of its Cinema Under the Stars series.
The 1938 screwball comedy "Bringing Up Baby," directed by Howard Hawks '18, will be shown July 6. The action revolves around the misadventures of a meek zoology professor (Grant), an heiress (Katharine Hepburn) and a pet leopard. Advance tickets will be available Tuesday, July 5.
Grant plays a suave retired diamond thief looking for a criminal in Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 Technicolor thriller "To Catch a Thief," also starring Grace Kelly and showing July 20. Advance tickets will be available Monday, July 18.

Outdoor Shakespeare
Two of William Shakespeare's romantic comedies will be staged at Cornell Plantations during July, with "As You Like It" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" performed in repertory on alternating nights, July 7-24.
Presented by the Ithaca Shakespeare Company, the outdoor performances will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the F.R. Newman Arboretum. "As You Like It" begins the series on July 7 and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" debuts July 8. There is a $10 suggested donation for admission. Free summer concerts, lectures
The School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions is presenting free public lectures, performances and Arts Quad concerts through Aug. 5.
Friday outdoor concerts include Afro-funk band Ikebe Breakdown, July 1; Rising Sign, Latin/Caribbean music, July 8; famed folk musicians Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, July 15; rock bands Backtalk Band on July 22 and Not From Wisconsin, July 29; and Annie and the Hedonists, blues, jazz, folk and bluegrass, Aug. 5.
Tuesday performances at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts include Babik, gypsy jazz, July 5; "HMS Pinafore" with the Cornell Savoyards, July 12; singer-songwriter Joe Crookston, July 19; Vanaver Caravan, global music and dance, July 26; and pianist Jacqueline Schwab, known for her work on Ken Burns' documentaries, Aug. 2.
Wednesday lectures in Kennedy Hall's Call Auditorium will feature Paul McEuen, July 6, on "The Future of Small"; Diane Ackerman, July 13, on "One Hundred Names for Love: Stroke, a Marriage, and the Language of Healing"; Jon Kleinberg, July 20, on "What Can Facebook, Amazon and Google Teach Us About Society and About Ourselves?"; and S.E. Cupp, July 27, on "Let's Talk Politics: Turning Your Opinions Into a Career."

Summer Salsa
Palante Salsa en Rueda Dance Troupe is holding Salsa classes Wednesdays at the Big Red Barn from July 13 to Aug. 10. Beginner Salsa 1 instruction begins at 6:30 p.m. and Beginner Salsa 2 (completion of Beginner 1 series is required) at 8 p.m.
Dancers will learn the basics of Salsa, including partner connectivity and principles of music and dance interpretation. No partner is required. The five-week series costs $45 for students, $80 per couple; $55 for non-students, $100 per couple. Drop-in rates for single classes are $11 and $13. Homegrown talent
The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art will host "A Celebration of Ithaca's Art" on Sunday, July 24, with local artists leading workshops and demonstrations. The Articipation family event is inspired by the museum's Mary Lou Harriott Collection of Ithaca Artists, featured in the current exhibition "Homegrown: The Harriott Collection." Admission is free.
Jenny Pope will demonstrate woodcarving techniques and discuss her work included in the exhibition. Max Levitt of the Hangar Theater and Design Bash, a collaborative costume and set design project, will hold a rapid-fire stage design workshop for all ages, in which participants will use found materials to create costumes and sets inspired by a song or poem.
