Professor Emeritus Emil J. Haller dies at age 78

Emil J. Haller, professor emeritus of educational administration at Cornell, died Nov. 20 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. He was 78.

Haller authored and co-authored numerous professional publications and books in his field, including popular textbooks "The Ethics of School Administration" (Teachers College Press, third edition, 2005) and "An Introduction to Educational Administration: Social, Legal and Ethical Perspectives" (Educator's International Press, 1997).

His research interests included administrative, social and political questions surrounding small and rural schools, the nature and usefulness of research in educational administration, and the causes the underachievement of poor and minority students in U.S. schools, with special attention to the attitudes and actions of teachers.

Born Jan. 5, 1933, in St. Louis, Mo., Haller earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Missouri. He served as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958 and then earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1966.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn (Adams), and four grown children and their families.

At the Haller family's request, there will be no calling hours. A service was held Nov. 25 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ithaca. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
