Two juniors receive Caplan Travel Fellowships

Lorraine Fitzmaurice '13 and Christopher Levesque '13 have received Harry Caplan Travel Fellowships worth $4,000 each to study and conduct research in France and Turkey, respectively.

Fitzmaurice, a music major and College Scholar, will study the Solesmes method of chant with Dom Daniel Saulnier in Tours, France, and conduct field research by recording and interviewing monks and professional vocalists who regularly perform the Gregorian repertoire.

Levesque, a German studies major and College Scholar, will travel west of the Golden Horn in Turkey to document remnants of the Ottoman Empire in various port cities.

The fellowships honor Harry Caplan, Class of 1916, the late professor emeritus of classics, who was considered one of most beloved and inspiring teachers for nearly 50 years. After his death in 1980, his former students contributed to an endowment in his honor. Annual travel fellowships from that endowment are awarded to students who share his interests -- including Greek and Latin classics, ancient Jewish culture, and ancient and medieval Latin rhetoric. The fellowship grants can subsidize specific academic projects or intense and informed tourism.
