Cornell, Ithaca College and community dancers will present 10 concerts featuring various style of modern dance, hip-hop, ballet and jazz as part of the Locally Grown Dance Festival.

The Locally Grown Dance Festival will showcase more than 10 performances of dance and music March 5-13. The celebration features individual works and collaborations by student, alumni and faculty from Cornell and Ithaca College, community members and visiting artists.

"People will see many different types of modern dance, along with hip-hop, ballet and jazz," said Cornell senior lecturer Bryan Suber, who organized the second annual festival. "Three of the shows work with live and recorded music in unusual ways. We're exploring ways in which music and movement are related by incorporating new movements into the same music or using different music with the same movements."

Some highlights of the festival include:Student choreographer Yasmin Fouladi '13 worked on a three-part series in the festival. "It's important to bring dance groups together because each group has its own style, which shows the malleability and variance of dance as an artistic medium," she said.

Each part features music composed by Olivier Messiaen, Arvo Pärt and Astor Piazzolla, performed live by local musicians Zachary Sweet on cello and Kathy Hansen on piano. Additional recorded music by Béla Bartók, Philip Glass and Street Drum Corps will differentiate each performance.

Single tickets range from $10-$15; tickets purchased for two events the same night are half price.

Advance sale flex passes are $34 and available through Feb. 29, equivalent to eight tickets (for eight people or up to eight performances). Flex pass holders are encouraged to exchange for tickets before the day of show.

Festival events will take place at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, Bailey Hall and Milstein Hall.

The festival is sponsored by the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance with support from the Cornell Council for the Arts.
