Actor, activist Danny Glover to visit campus Sept. 25

Actor and activist Danny Glover, an outspoken supporter of workers' rights, will visit Cornell Sept. 25 for events with students, faculty and staff.

Glover will speak in two ILR classes and visit with Ithaca youth, Ujamaa residents and members of the Cornell Organization for Labor Action. At 5 p.m., "Race, Activism and Art: A Conversation with Danny Glover" at the Africana Studies and Research Center will include Glover; Noliwe Rooks, associate professor of Africana studies and of feminist, gender and sexuality studies; Sabine Haenni, associate professor of film and American studies; and Marc Bayard, executive director of the Worker Institute at Cornell.

Tickets to the forum will be available for pickup at the Willard Straight Ticket Office. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are free but distribution will be limited to one ticket per person due to seating constraints. The event is open to the Cornell community only.

Tall, lanky and raspy voiced, the 66-year-old Glover is best known for his roles in such movies as "Lethal Weapon" and "The Color Purple."

A philanthropist, Glover has supported projects for Haiti, AIDS research and his mother's alma mater, Paine College in Augusta, Ga. Glover has credited unions with providing his family with health care during his childhood in San Francisco.

On Monday, Sept. 24, two Glover-produced films will be shown in the Film Forum (B21) at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts: "The Black Power Mixtape 1967-75"at 4:30 p.m. and "Bamako"at 7 p.m. Rooks and Haenni will introduce the films and facilitate discussion. Screenings are free and open to the public.
