Cornell and county United Way campaigns top goals
By Julie Glanville
Thanks to thousands of generous donations from staff and faculty members, Cornell’s 2014 United Way Campaign raised a total of $815,152, exceeding its goal of $815,000.
The donations will help the United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC) meet urgent health and human services needs in the community, including providing hunger and food security assistance, child care and early learning programs, advocacy for at-risk youth, support for seniors, prescription drug assistance and other programs that help people establish financial stability and build self-sufficiency.
“Cornell’s 2014 contribution is not only great news for Tompkins County, but is also a reflection of the Cornell community’s remarkable spirit of giving,” said Vice President KyuJung Whang, Cornell United Way campaign chair for 2013-14.
Students made a significant impact as well, raising $29,000 so far this year through various Cornell Student United Way events. Their largest fundraiser of the year, the annual Duff Ball on May 20, sold out in one minute, raising $35,000 in gross sales. The Cornell women’s hockey team and National Society of Minorities in Hospitality students also raised funds for UWTC by hosting Big Red United and the Hilltop Jamboree, respectively.
On April 25, Cornell staff and student volunteers celebrated with other community supporters at UWTC’s annual Community Campaign Celebration and Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, held at the Country Club of Ithaca. Attendees were entertained with music from Cornell a cappella group Nothing But Treble and a showing of the Cornell Student United Way Duff Ball video.Cornell’s contributions helped UWTC close out its 2013-14 campaign with a total of $2,100,652 raised, exceeding its $2,088,000 goal. Approximately $30,000 more was raised this year than last, and it is the 10th consecutive year the campaign has exceeded its fundraising goal.
“We so appreciate our strong partnership with Cornell in helping us meet the needs of our community,” said UWTC President James Brown. “We could not do the work we do related to education, income and health without the generous support shown every year by Cornell’s students, staff and faculty members.”
University Librarian Anne Kenney will serve as the 2014-15 Cornell United Way Campaign chair. Chief Information Officer and Vice President Ted Dodds will serve as deputy chair.
