Alan Mathios, the Rebecca Q. and James C. Morgan Dean and professor of policy analysis and management in the College of Human Ecology, has been appointed to fill a midterm vacancy at the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The commission conducts accreditation and pre-accreditation activities for institutions of higher education in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including distance education and correspondence education programs offered at those institutions.

Oct. 24 Update:
Dean Alan Mathios has been appointed to the Middle States Commission for a term running Jan. 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2017.

Previously Mathios served the Philadelphia-based organization’s Self-Study Institute by assisting other academic institutions on planning their self-study reports. Before his latest appointment, the commission designated Mathios as an alternate commissioner and he recently served on an evaluation team for another peer institution.

He co-chaired the committee that authored Cornell’s most recent self-study, completed in 2011, leading to the university’s reaccreditation through 2021. Marin Clarkberg, Cornell’s director of institutional research and planning, supported much of this work, Mathios noted, adding: “Her teamwork has been essential to the quality of Cornell’s self-study material. Without Marin’s insights and influence, I would not be in the position to have been elected a commissioner.”

Mathios is eligible for election to a three-year commissioner appointment of his own when the vacancy term is completed in December 2014. In keeping with the commission’s conflict-of-interest policy, Mathios will be recused from commission decisions involving Cornell University.
