Email and Office 365
For most employees, in early October your Cornell email will change so that it will no longer pass through Cornell's infrastructure and will be routed directly to Office 365. A small number of Cornell departments have already experienced this change and say their mail service seems the same or better.
There are two things you can do to improve the likelihood of a smooth experience:
- Make sure Junk mail filtering is turned on in Office 365: https://it.cornell.edu/junk-filter.
- Check your forwarding setting in Who I Am to make sure it’s accurate, still necessary, and forwarding to no more than one place (this includes Cmail): https://www.whoiam.cornell.edu/whoiam/mail.html
Your forwarding in Who I Am will automatically be copied into Office 365 when the change occurs unless you’re currently forwarding to multiple outside accounts. If you are currently forwarding to multiple places, change your forwarding setting now so there’s only one. This will ensure mail continues to be delivered to the forwarded location in addition to being delivered to Office 365.
Note: Sending email to Cmail counts as forwarding, so if you forward email to Cmail only, that will be copied into Office 365. If you forward to Cmail and one or more other destinations, you’ll need to choose only one destination in order for that forward to be copied into Office 365 automatically.
After the change, since junk mail handling will be done by Office 365, you may notice some differences, like your Junk folder collecting more spam as it accumulates messages that previously would have gone into a separate quarantine that wasn't part of Office 365. Also, it will no longer be possible to completely opt out of spam filtering, since Office 365, like most major email service providers, does not provide this as an option.
CIT is making this change as directed by the university's IT Governance Council to make more efficient use of Cornell’s IT resources and as part of the ongoing process of using cloud services to meet the Cornell community’s IT needs.
