Cornell Elves begin collecting backpacks and school supplies

Collections of new backpacks and supplies for the Cornell Elves Backpack Program have begun.

Last year, the Cornell Elves Backpack Program provided more than 1,100 new, filled backpacks to the area’s neediest children, as identified by their nurses/social workers, in 28 schools. This year, program organizers are working with 25 area schools to provide backpacks to children entering kindergarten through sixth grade.

A new backpack and all supplies can be purchased for $20-$25, once back-to-school sales begin. You can choose a school from the list at the Elves Program website or bring backpacks by Aug. 24 to Maureen Brull’s office (see address below).

Those who prefer to make cash donations can mail checks to Brull, made out to “The Elves.” This program is run entirely through volunteers; there are no overhead costs, and every penny donated goes directly to help children.

Program sponsors include Cornell employees, students, local families, neighbors, businesses and organizations such as the Girl Scouts. Additional information about the Elves Program can be found on its website or contact Maureen Brull, senior consultant for Education and Voluntary Plans at mpb8@cornell.edu or 607-255-7509.
