The Second City Comes to Cornell
By Jessamyn Perlus
What do Eugene Levy, Stephen Colbert, Bill Hader, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Chris Redd, and Amber Ruffin have in common? They all honed their comedic skills with the famous Second City improv company that started over 60 years ago in Chicago, Illinois. This month, Second City is coming to Cornell to offer award-winning improv and comedy techniques for Cornell students to strengthen interview, networking, and professional skills. The campus community is invited to join them on March 25 and 26 to enjoy some laughs, fun, and skill building.
Beginning on Friday, March 25, Second City improvisors will host six small in-person improv workshops in partnership with Cornell University Program Board. During this unique program, designed specifically for Cornell students, improvisers will guide participants through a series of exercises that explore Second City's unique approach to improvisation, including being present in the moment, taking risks, making and accepting offers, and other fundamental building blocks, all in a supportive and fun environment.
Then, on Saturday March 26, students will have a chance to participate in Second City Works: Improv Skills for Professional Success, three in-person workshops designed specifically for career development and professional skills. Second City has worked with Cornell Career Services to bring a fun, approachable method to help Cornell students build these valuable skills no matter the career path. This high-energy interactive event will empower students to ace interviews, build authentic working relationships, and exude confidence under pressure. Students will learn techniques to show up as their best self in meetings, interviews, and classrooms, all by using the cornerstone philosophy of “Yes, And”.
To cap off this exciting series, Second City will host a free improv show for the entire Cornell community on March 26 at Call Auditorium in Kennedy Hall at 7:00pm. Get to know the next generation of comedy superstars as you sit back and enjoy the show or participate in the fun by suggesting a theme. See for yourself why The Second City has been the first name in laughter for over sixty years!
The Second City Works events and Saturday night performance are made possible by Cornell Career Services through the generous support from an alumni donor.
