Three influential labor economists share career highlights

Three recently retired ILR School professors who helped shape the international labor economics field reflected on their academic journeys in question-and-answer stories.
Professor Emeritus Gary Fields developed the concepts of poverty and low labor earnings as the world’s most pressing economic problems. Fields was ILR’s John P. Windmuller of International and Comparative Labor. Read his story.
Professor Emeritus Lawrence Kahn influenced researchers studying changes in the U.S. gender pay gap. Also known for his sports economics research, Kahn was ILR’s Braunstein Family Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations. Read his story.
Professor Emerita Francine Blau ’66 was among the first economists to research gender pay inequities. Blau, who was the school’s Frances Perkins Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations, was inspired by her ILR professors who “profoundly impacted me and set me on my career trajectory.” Read her story.
