Inclusive Excellence Podcast: Embrace discomfort and do it anyway

In this episode of the Inclusive Excellence Podcast, co-hosts Erin Sember-Chase and Toral Patel welcome Alexis Boyce, manager of Cornell’s Asian American Studies Program and co-chair of the Staff Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee.

Boyce, who played a key role in establishing the Staff DEIA Committee in 2021, discusses the group’s ongoing efforts to address staff concerns and drive meaningful change. Among their initiatives are improving parking and transportation options, advocating for flexible work arrangements and raising awareness of accessibility challenges faced by individuals with learning differences.

Reflecting on her unique perspective in DEI work, Boyce underscores the importance of recognizing both privileged and non-privileged identities. She describes herself as a “straight, white, cisgender American woman,” emphasizing how this awareness has informed her approach to diversity and inclusion.

“It's important not to just jump right into this work,” Boyce cautioned. “It isn’t meant to be undertaken lightly or thoughtlessly. I’ve been fortunate to have generous colleagues and supervisors who taught me so much and helped me lay the groundwork for identifying issues and understanding my responsibility to make a difference.”

In recognition of her dedication to the committee’s work, Boyce received the Employee Assembly’s Award for Staff Inclusion and Integrity. This award honors staff members who foster a culture of belonging and promote a workplace grounded in honesty, fairness and respect for all.

“This work can be energizing, but it can also be draining,” Boyce acknowledged. “To truly engage in this work, you must accept both those things and still do it anyway. There is an inherent risk in it, and there are going to be times when you try and fail. But that’s what keeps me grounded, focused and optimistic about continuing this work.”

Tune in to Episode 89: Embrace Discomfort and Do It Anyway to hear how Boyce is championing change, fostering belonging and inspiring transformation at Cornell and beyond.
