Glee Club sells out famous venues on Northeast tour

The Cornell University Glee Club, on a tour of the Northeast through Jan. 20, has sold out its concerts at high-profile venues including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (Jan. 9) and Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in New York City (Jan. 16).

The group is also giving concerts and workshops at selected public and private schools during the tour, which began Jan. 8 in Hazleton, Pa. The itinerary includes 18 concerts at a wide range of venues in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Connecticut and New Jersey.

Other tour highlights include a public concert Jan. 10 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.; performing for the Supreme Court Jan. 12 in Baltimore, Md., at the invitation of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg '54; and a show at the historic Old South Church in Boston Jan. 15. Alumni receptions were also scheduled in Boston, New York and Washington.

The tour is an opportunity for the Glee Club to share its unique repertoire and the Cornell musical tradition with alumni, younger students and local communities. The group is the oldest student-run organization at Cornell and has performed and toured around the world since 1868.

Each concert features three sections: The all-male chorus performing the music of many cultures, from the European Renaissance to folk songs of the Americas; arrangements of popular songs performed by a cappella subgroup The Hangovers; and a set of traditional Cornell songs. The current repertoire includes two newly commissioned pieces by composer Daniel Kellogg, "Innisfree" and "Winter Lullaby."

John Rowehl, a Cornell D.M.A. student who has been assistant conductor of the Glee Club for eight years, is conducting the group during the tour and at a post-tour concert on campus. Scott Tucker, the Priscilla Edwards Browning Director of Choral Music, is on sabbatical.

The Glee Club will reprise selections from the tour at a public concert Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. in Sage Chapel. Admission is $5 in advance; $10 at the door or $5 for students. For tickets and information, visit http://www.gleeclub.com/netour/return.php.
