Dr. Geraldine McGinty, an esteemed clinical operations strategist, administrator and radiologist, has been appointed senior associate dean for clinical affairs at Weill Cornell Medicine, effective Sept. 1.

In her new role, Dr. McGinty will provide Dean Augustine M.K. Choi with strategic counsel and work to realize his vision for the institution’s clinical enterprise. Dr. McGinty will also act as the principal liaison between the Dean’s Office, the Weill Cornell Medicine Physician Organization, academic clinical department leadership and clinical faculty, along with NewYork-Presbyterian, ensuring alignment between all parts of the institution’s clinical mission.

Dr. McGinty is currently chief strategy officer and chief contracting officer of the Weill Cornell Medicine Physician Organization and an associate professor of clinical radiology. Dr. McGinty succeeds Dr. Peter N. Schlegel, who stepped down in Fall 2020; Dr. Michael G. Stewart has served in an interim capacity.

“I’m honored to serve as senior associate dean for clinical affairs and support Dean Choi’s vision for our clinical enterprise,” said Dr. McGinty, who is also an associate professor of population health sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine and a radiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “I will be focusing on liaising with our clinical leadership and the other mission deans to support Weill Cornell Medicine’s commitment to care, discover and teach. And, as the first woman to serve in this role, I’m also appreciative of Dean. Choi’s commitment to fostering diversity and mentorship in healthcare leadership.”

As senior associate dean for clinical affairs, Dr. McGinty will operationalize Weill Cornell Medicine’s commitment to provide exemplary care to patients and create enduring change in medicine. She will collaborate closely with Dr. Rainu Kaushal, senior associate dean for clinical research, to capitalize on the institution’s rich clinical research enterprise, which drives the experimental application and comparative investigations of new medicines, technologies, interventions and healthcare delivery models to patients.

“It’s important that we engage the entire organization in clinical research,” Dr. McGinty said, “so that everywhere we deliver care, we’re not only delivering the best care for today, but we are making the discoveries that will inform the best care for tomorrow.”

She will also liaise with Weill Cornell Medicine’s academic clinical leadership, ensuring that department chairs, division chiefs and their clinical faculty have the resources they need to deliver the finest patient care. And as Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian continue to expand their clinical footprint in New York City, Dr. McGinty will work to build relationships with physicians and patients in those local communities.

“We learned many lessons last year on how to increase access to the really excellent care we provide our patients,” Dr. McGinty said. “Our clinical expansion in New York is reflective of our commitment to offer the highest level of care to the diverse communities we serve, and I’m proud to be part of advancing this key institutional priority.”

Dr. McGinty received her medical degree in 1988 from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and a master’s in business administration from Columbia University in 2000. She completed her radiology residency in 1993 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in women’s imaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital a year later. Dr. McGinty served on Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s faculty as an assistant professor of radiology from 1995-2002, and was in private practice from 2002-2013 serving as managing partner of a 70 physician multispecialty medical group on Long Island from 2010-2013, before joining Weill Cornell Medicine’s faculty in 2014. She was appointed chief strategy officer and chief contracting officer of the Weill Cornell Medicine Physician Organization in 2017. She was the founding academic director for Cornell’s Executive M.B.A./M.S. in Healthcare Leadership, which combines a Master of Science degree in healthcare leadership from the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences and a Master of Business Administration from the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. 

In 2018, Dr. McGinty was elected chair of the American College of Radiology’s board—the first woman to hold the role in the college’s near 100-year history. A champion of mentorship and sponsorship, Dr. McGinty in 2016 founded and led the RADxx Initiative to cultivate mentorship and networking opportunities in radiology and imaging informatics. In 2019, Weill Cornell Medicine awarded Dr. McGinty the Jessica M. and Natan Bibliowicz Award for Excellence in Mentoring Women Faculty for her commitment to advancing the academic careers of women faculty.
