Rich Knepper Elected Chair of the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC)
The Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC) is pleased to announce that Rich Knepper from the Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing has been elected as the new Chair of the organization. Having previously served as Vice Chair, Knepper brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to advancing the mission of CASC in the rapidly evolving landscape of research computing and data.
CASC has been a vital organization for the national cyberinfrastructure community, promoting engagement with key agencies, sharing best practices, and providing strategic insights essential for the development of cutting-edge cyberinfrastructure, software, and training. With membership now exceeding one hundred institutions, CASC is well-positioned to address a broader array of challenges facing the computational science community.
As Chair, Knepper aims to leverage CASC’s diverse membership and engaged Executive Committee to influence the future of computational science. "We can serve as trusted advisors to policymakers and program developers," he stated. "My commitment is to ensure that our members are actively involved in discussions that enhance institutional capabilities, foster national competitiveness, and drive innovation."
Knepper's vision includes broadening CASC's collaborations with institutions in Canada, the UK, and Europe, while also enhancing partnerships with national and regional organizations. He emphasizes the importance of recruiting new members, developing joint initiatives, and providing timely guidance on critical issues.
"The environment we operate in is continually evolving, and so must we," Knepper remarked. "With our active and dedicated membership, we are uniquely positioned to shape the future of our field. Let’s capitalize on our strengths and extend our influence together."
CASC has made significant strides since its inception, and under Knepper's leadership, the organization is set to build on this momentum, navigating the challenges posed by new compliance requirements, the demand for AI-ready infrastructure, and pressing sustainability concerns.
