Kenneth F. Kahn, founder of LRP Publications and publisher of Human Resource Executive, has received the 1997 Judge William B. Groat Alumni Award from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Kahn will be honored April 15 at a luncheon at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.
The Groat Award, named for the New York State Supreme Court justice who was instrumental in the founding of the ILR School and in drafting its charter, is presented annually to an ILR graduate who has demonstrated exceptional professional accomplishment in the field of industrial and labor relations and outstanding service to the school.
"Ken's professional accomplishments in the field of industrial and labor relations and his commitment to the ILR School, exemplified by his leadership on key committees, are most worthy of honor," said Edward J. Lawler, dean of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. "His dedicated volunteer service to the school, especially as chair of the ILR Building Campaign, has played a key role in making the new ILR building a reality."
Kahn founded LRP Publications in 1977 after a career as a practicing attorney specializing in employment law. LRP Publications is a $30 million publisher of newsletters, loose-leaf services, professional books, trade magazines, videos, directories, on-line services and conferences. Its flagship publications are Human Resource Executive and Risk & Insurance. Areas covered by LRP products include human resources, workers' compensation, education, litigation, personal injury, risk management, banking and science and technology publishing.
Kahn created Human Resource Executive in 1987. It is now the leading trade publication for more than 50,000 senior human resource professionals.
Recently LRP Publications and Human Resource Executive have entered into a joint venture with the ILR School to be the primary Web site index to all other human resource sites. The site can be found at. In addition, LRP maintains a Web site of education administrators at and a new science and technology bookstore at .
LRP Publications has more than 300 products, including over 60 newsletters. The company has more than 350 employees located in offices in Horsham, Pa.; Alexandria, Va.; and West Palm Beach, Fla.
In addition to his work as a publisher, Kahn has initiated two annual conferences: the Human Resource Executive Forum, which annually gives the Human Resource Executive of the Year award, and the Workers' Compensation & Disability Conference and Expo.
Kahn has been steadfast in his support of the ILR School. He currently serves as chairman of the ILR Building Campaign, which has raised more than $2.5 million toward the construction of ILR's new complex, to be ready for occupancy in January 1998. In addition, Kahn serves as chair of the Catherwood Library Advisory Council. He is a founding member of both the ILR Founders Fund (1976) and ILR Presidents (1986) and was a member of the ILR Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Kahn also has served on several university-wide organizations, including the University Council, Tower Club and President's Circle Club.
Kahn earned a bachelor's degree from the ILR School in 1969 and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1972.
